Grew up in Mountain City, Tennessee, but was born in California according to Ohio death records. Went to Carson-Newman in Tennessee and started playing basketball in Akron in 1930. The 6'11 center died of a heart attack in 1983. Brother of major league pitcher Clyde Shoun.
