Hitt was a basketball and football star at Mississippi College, as well as playing baseball and running track.
He was draft by the Cleveland Rams in the NFL and played three games before signing on to play with the Wingfoots. After coaching and serving as Athletic Director at Central High School in Jackson, Mississippi, Hitt joined the FBI where he worked as a special agent for 35 years. He then worked as a training officer for the Mobile Sheriff's Department.
He married Evelyn Eddleman (1917-2002) and they two sons, Joel Hitt III and Richard Hitt.
