Strack was from Indianapolis, and after high school attended the University of Michigan. After a brief professional career, Strack returned to his alma mater as the coach for the freshman team. He joined on to be an assistant coach for the varsity team under William Perigo, and left in 1959 for the head coach job at Idaho. He returned after one season to take over the Wolverine head coaching job, where he stayed for eight seasons. He then went to Arizona State where he was the Athletic Director before retiring. He died of pneumonia in 2014.

Strack was married to Ruth Ann Meyer (d. 2011) and they had five children.
