Born to James and Jane Joyce, Jimmy went to Darby High School and Temple before playing pro basketball a few years. He went on to teach physical education in Ferris, Delaware. He worked for many years in the Traffic Department in Hercules, Delaware before retiring in 1979, moving on to work at Elkton Rail Car Repair.
He married Ruth Lynch on October 22, 1949, who died a few months before he did. They had five children.
