Born to Ray and Corhea Patterson in Lafayette, Indiana, Patterson played basketball, football and ran track at Wayland and later at basketball and track at UW. He served briefly in the military during World War 2, and returned to play basketball professionally for a season while finishing his education. He went on to teach and coach at his alma mater, Wayland.

In 1968, he was the first president of the Milwaukee Bucks. He later moved on to run the Houston Rockets, turning the franchise into a very successful one.

He married Ruth Eloise Gould (b. 1921) in 1945 and they had five children.

  1. My brother and I grew up with Pat and Steve. Ray was a wonderful man and Ruth babysat my brother and I several times. Just really good folk!
