Born in D.C., Ford was a football and basketball player in college as well as professionally. After a year at Morgan State, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy but was discharged a short time later as World War 2 came to a close. He moved on to the University of Michigan where he became an all-pro football player. He played basketball professionally briefly for Dayton, but he turned in a professionally football career that spanned 11 season. as a defensive end primarily for the Cleveland Browns, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1976, four years after his sudden death from a heart attack at 46 years of age.

Len was married to Geraldine Bledsoe and they had two daughers prior to their 1959 divorce.

Dave Williams (Indianapolis Kautskys) Identified

Another one that I had no information, but came back a few months later with fresh eyes. Seeing that he went to Central Normal College, I found an article that said he was from Auburn, Illinois. A search into census records lead to a possible identification, but considering how common his name is, I needed more confirmation. I checked the parents of the suspected-Dave and found his mother's obituary. From Auburn herself, it mention her son was a Central Normal student. Bingo.

I even added a photo I found.

Born to Henry and Mary Ellen Doll in Colorado. He attended Chaffey HS in Ontario before returning to Colorado to go to college. As a sophomore he lead CU to the NCAA tournament and the NIT. He apparently missed a year for reasons unknown before returning to the court in 1941-42. He served in the U.S. Army during World War 2, and then played for four seasons professionally. After his playing career, he returned to Steamboat Springs where he worked as a salesman.

On September 14, 1959, Doll was reported missing by his wife. His body was found on September 18 on Rabbit Ears Pass in Colorado. He apparently shot himself with a .45 cailber handgun he purchased the day he disappeared. A lot of different dates are given for his death (Sept 5, 8, 18) so I am going with the newspaper articles to estimate. He was only 40 years of age. He left behind a wife and his mother.

DeZonie was a talented basketball player who played with the New York Rens for many years before playing with Paterson in the ABL. He joined the Dayton Rens, who became a member of the NBL when the Detroit franchise dropped out a couple months into the season. However, when the NBL merged with the BAA to form the NBA, the all-black Rens were not one of the teams invited to join. Not able to play with the all-white NBA, DeZonie returned to the ABL to play with the Harlem Yankees for a season. Finally, in 1950, DeZonie, along with Chuck Cooper, Earl Loyd and Sweetwater Clifton, signed with NBA teans to become the first black players in the NBA, forever breaking the color barrier in the league. However, he only played briefly for the Blackhawks before quitting the team, citing the racist climate there. He returned to the ABL for one more season.
Later in life, he operated a popular nightclub and was also a fairly accomplished drummer.

He was married to Ethel and they had two sons.

Devoll grew up in Pontiac, Michigan. He is listed as trying to make the Michigan State basketball team, but a month later he was putting up points for Lawrence Tech. I think he changed schools after failing to make the Spartans. Nothing indicates he ever actually played for MSU.

He married Joyce Nelson on April 1, 1950. They had a daughter and two sons.

Crowe was a baseball and basketball star out of Franklin, Indiana. He grew up on his parent's farm, and went to college at Indiana Central. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army. After the service, he went to California, where he played with the Los Angeles Red Devils basketball team (with Jackie Robinson as a teammate.) He played basketball for the Dayton Rens, but is better known nine-year major league baseball career as well as being a star in the Negro Leagues. He was selected to the 1958 All-Star game while with the Cincinnati Reds, and played in the Major Leagues until 1961. After his baseball career, he sold insurance and taught physical education in high school. He eventually moved to the Catskill Mountains in New York, living in an isolated cabin with no electricity, telephone or plumbing. He lived the simple life for 30 years before moving to California to be near his daughter as he aged and his health began to fail. He died in 2011 at 89 years of age.

His brother, Ray, was a prominent high school basketball coach in Indianapolis.

He married Yvonne Moman and they had two daughters.

Born in Tennessee to John and Sarah Crocker, Dillard's family moved to Niles, Michigan, when he was young. He lead Niles High School to the state basketball championship in 1943, and enlisted in the army after graduating. He enrolled at Western Michigan after the war, and after school, played professional basketball for five years. After his playing days, he owned and operated Crocker Sheet Metal Shop in Niles. I haven't found anything saying he actually played basketball at the collegiate level (Western Michigan or otherwise).

He married Dorothy Beck (d. 2002) on April 28, 1944. He and "Dot" had two sons and two daughters.

Cotton is a World War 2 veteran, serving in the navy in the Pacific. He returned from the war to play one season (I haven't seen anything he played more) at University of Wyoming. After a few years with the Nuggets, he moved on to be a head coach at the high school level for a few years before coaching collegiately. After coaching the men's team at Adams, he moved on to coach the women's team for ten seasons. Also an instructor and athletic director at the school, Cotton retired from Adams in 1989. He received a Masters Degree from Denver University, and a doctorate in education from Wyoming in 1963.

Cotton married Mabel Holmes in 1947 and they have three children.

Born to John and Mary Cofer, Doyle played basketball for Indiana State as well as serving in the Marines during World War 2. He played professional basketball for the House of David and the Vagabond Kings. Cofer became a civil engineer and owned Cofer Construction Company. He was killed in an accident on a construction site when the bulldozer he was trying to load onto a flatbed toppled over and crushed him. He was just three days short of his 76th birthday.

He had a son and three daughters.

He later returned to the Chicago area to become the head basketball coach at Evanston Township HS, compiling a 362-145 record and winning the 1968 state championship.

He was married to Judy Johnson (1926-1965) and had a son, John, and a daughter, Terry. He later remarried, to Emily.

Okay. This was a very tough one.We had his name, Bill Brown, and his school, Maryland. Very common name, so it wasn't going to be easy. Newspaper searches at the time yielded an article about his marriage to Virginia Morse, as well as his hometown (Strugis, Kentucky) and his wife's hometown (Swarthmore, Pennsylvania). Searching for his census information yielded differing results, but a search for Virginia got me her father's name, as well as her high school yearbook. Her father's obituary didn't mention "Virginia" but did mention a Billie Minisci. He yearbook indicated she went by the "Billy" so at least I know we have the right people. Searching for this, I find an obituary for Wilfred B. "Bill" Brown who was formerly married to Billie Minisci.

Born to Floyd and Lillie Brown, Bill served in the military during World War 2, and returned to star at Maryland. Signed with Oshkosh but was sold to Waterloo on November 28.

Brown was a regular on the barnstorming basketball circuit, and even appeared in the film "Go Man Go," about the Harlem Globetrotters. He formed his own barnstorming team in 1960, named the Satellites. Rookie died of cancer in 1971 at 46 years of age.

He was married to Marcella and had two sons and a step-daughter.

Brannum served in the service during World War 2. He transferred from Kentucky after failing to make the varsity team, heading to Michigan State. He went on to play seven season of professional basketball. He went on to be a very successful coach, mainly at Brandeis.
Brannum died of pancreatic cancer in 2005.

Bob's twin brother Clarence was a teammate of his with the Sheboygan Redskins in 1950-51.

Born to Louis and Marie Berce in Wisconsin, Gene immediately made an impact on the Marquette University squad as a freshman. He played at Cornell during the war, but returned to Marquette after his service. He was the first Marquette player to score 1000 points in his career, and was drafted in 1948 by the New York Knicks. He signed with the Oshkosh All-Stars instead and plated in the NBL, but when the BAA and NBL merged to form the NBA, he found himself the Tri-Cities club. Berce would play some in the short-lived NPBL in 1950-51.

Gene and his wife Mary had eight children.

He signed with the Vagabond Kings, playing one season in the NBL before the Kings left the league. Art served in the Pacific during World War 2, spending time in the Philippines and the Solomon Islands.

He was married to Grace Borchart in 1953.

Born to Russian immigrants Hyman (1895-1985) and Sarah Alterman (1896-1997), Leonard Alterman grew up in Denver, playing high school and college basketball in Denver as well as professionally. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943, serving in World War 2. Alterman played for the Nuggets in 1948-49, but only played home games because he could not afford to take the time off work to play on the road.

He married Juanita Zinn (1924-2012) and they had two sons, Buzz and Philip, and two daughters, Judy and Nancy.
