Born in Elgin, Illinois, to John and Louise Burmaster, Jack went to Elgin HS and then to Illinois. He played professionally for 3 seasons. He later returned to the Chicago area to become the head basketball coach at Evanston Township HS, compiling a 362-145 record and winning the 1968 state championship.

He was married to Judy Johnson (1926-1965) and had a son, John, and a daughter, Terry. He later remarried, to Emily.

  1. Burmaster was also head coach at duPont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky. He coached one season there (1951-52). His team finished runner-up to Cuba High School, a team Manual had beaten twice during the regular season. https://khsaa.org/records/basketball/bbk-recordbook_sweet16historyresults.pdf
