Born to Lithuanian immigrants, Guokas' career ended after he lost his leg in an auto accident. He moved into broadcasting, and spent many years as the voice of the Philadelphia Eagles.

His son, Matthew, also played in the NBA. His brother Al Guokas played professional basketball, also.

He married Joan Burnham in 1941, and in addition to his son, they also had a daughter.
