In 1946, Al enterd the U.S. Navy out of high school, and after his service, went to NW Missouri. In 1950, he was drafted by the Fort Wayne Pistons but didn't make the squad, and then signed with Kansas City on November 11. After the Hi-Spots folded, Henningsen went to the Utica Pros in the ABL, and then played for the Whirlwinds and the Majors, two of the teams that traveled with the Harlem Globetrotters. After that grueling tour, he returned to Missouri to go into Education and eventually became a superintendent of schools.

He married Verlee Poldberg (d. 2016) in 1952 and they had two sons and a daughter.
