Dickey graduated from Pendleton High School and went right in to military's V-12 Program at DePauw, to prepare for World War 2. After the war, Dickey went to North Carolina State. (As stated previously in this blog, college basketball eligibility was restored by athletes who served, so the time a DePauw didn't effect his four years at NC State.) An All-American at NC State, Dickey was drafted by the Baltimore Bullets in 1950 but chose to play with the Anderson Packers of the NPBL instead. After the demise of the Packers, Dickey played a year with the Celtics. He would wind up working for many years as an insurance agent, and died in 2006 after complication from surgery on his lung.

He and his wife, Jean, had seven children.
