Born to Lester and Minne McCool, Norm lead Bosse HS to two state basketball championships. A talented baseball player also, he was offered a contract with the St Louis Browns but chose to go to college instead. After a year of professional basketball with his hometown Evansville Agogans of the National Professional Basketball League, McCool would later work for the family business, the Coca-Cola Bottling Works.

Norm and his wife, Maxey, had three sons and a daughter.
