After high school, Gaisser went into the U.S. Army to serve during World War 2, seeing combat in Italy and North Africa. In October of 1946, he was invited to tryouts with the newly-formed Boston Celtics in the BAA, but did not make the squad. He did play, however, with the Evansville Agogans. He worked for the U.S. Post Office, and the later for the U.S. Treasury Department. He retired from the IRS in 1981.

He married to Anna Crosley (d. 1977) and they had two daughters.
